Cupping Therapy
Cupping therapy can be incorporated into Meagan’s massage treatments to help work with stubborn muscular tension, restricted movement and areas that feel tight, overworked or difficult to release through massage alone.
Rather than being offered as a separate treatment, cupping is thoughtfully combined with hands-on massage techniques according to what your body needs.
What to Expect from Cupping Therapy During Your Massage
Cupping therapy can be incorporated into Meagan’s massage treatments to help work with stubborn muscular tension, restricted movement and areas that feel tight, overworked or difficult to release through massage alone.
Rather than being offered as a separate treatment, cupping is thoughtfully combined with hands-on massage techniques according to what your body needs.
What is cupping therapy?
Cupping therapy uses specially designed cups to create gentle suction against the skin. This lifts the skin and underlying tissues rather than pressing down into the muscles in the way traditional massage does.
Meagan may use two different forms of cupping during your massage:
-
Static cupping: Cups are placed over specific areas of tension and left in position for a short time.
-
Slide cupping: Massage oil is applied so the cups can glide slowly across tight muscles and connective tissues.
Cupping is commonly used across the back, shoulders, hips and other muscular areas holding tension.
How can cupping complement remedial massage?
Cupping approaches tight tissue differently from firm massage techniques. The suction creates space between layers of tissue and encourages local circulation through the treated area.
When combined with remedial massage, cupping therapy may help:
-
Release stubborn muscular and fascial tension
-
Ease tight, overworked muscles
-
Improve freedom of movement
-
Support recovery from physical strain
-
Reduce feelings of stiffness and restriction
-
Allow targeted areas to relax without relying on excessive pressure
This makes cupping particularly useful for clients who want focused remedial work but do not necessarily want maximum-pressure deep-tissue massage.
What does cupping feel like?
The cups usually create a firm pulling or stretching sensation as they suction onto the skin. You may feel some initial tightness, but cupping should never feel sharply painful or intolerable.
Slide cupping can feel similar to a deep, gliding massage. Static cups create a more sustained feeling of pressure in one area.
Meagan adjusts the strength, placement and duration of the cups according to your comfort. She will check in with you throughout the treatment and can remove or reposition a cup at any time.
Will cupping leave marks?
Static cupping can leave circular marks that range from light pink to dark red or purple. The colour and duration vary between clients and even between different areas of the body.
These marks are created by the suction drawing blood toward the surface of the skin. They are not caused by impact, although the treated area may occasionally feel tender afterwards.
Cupping marks generally fade naturally over several days, but darker marks can sometimes remain visible for a week or longer. Meagan will always discuss this with you before using static cups, particularly if you have an upcoming event or would prefer not to have visible marks.
Slide cupping is generally less likely to leave strong circular marks.
Is cupping suitable for everyone?
Cupping may not be appropriate over broken, irritated or infected skin, or for people with certain medical conditions, bleeding disorders or medications that affect blood clotting.
Before incorporating cupping therapy into your massage, Meagan will discuss your health history, current symptoms and preferences to make sure it is appropriate for you.
You are also completely welcome to decline cupping. It is always optional and only included with your consent.
Which treatments include cupping?
Cupping therapy may be incorporated into Meagan’s Full Body Remedial Massage when it will complement the treatment and help address specific areas of muscular tension.
Gentle slide cupping may also be included in the Full Body Honouring Massage, where it is blended into the flowing rhythm of the treatment.
